My group and I worked hard to complete the last few assignments that helped us learn an immense amount about the different birthing positions and their impact. Since identifying a topic, reviewing literature, and drafting our project proposal we discovered more about the impact of different birthing positions. Being in an upright position such as squatting, sitting, or kneeling has shown to decrease the amount of time it takes for the baby to come out. An upright position is actually a very common position to be in for many, but since western medicine practices have touched other societies, countries like the U.S, have encouraged and pushed women to go through labor in a supine position in a hospital bed. The literature review part of this assignment has changed my assumptions about birthing positions. I had previously thought there was either no difference in the impact of different birthing positions or that supine was going to be proven a better position for birthing. I grew up thinking that laying supine in a hospital bed was the only way a women should give birth, but I learned quickly through basic research that an upright position is a more efficient way of going through labor and may even be more comfortable. My team and I thought of incorporating the subject of spinning babies but decided it was not going to fit into our proposal draft, although we were very interested in the topic as well. My group did not have to change our topic or question once we went through the literature review. These findings about birthing positions will have an impact on my future nursing practice. Knowing that many individuals are unaware of the studies behind different birthing positions will encourage me as the nurse to provide some sort of education on giving birth in an upright position. As opposed to the more common practice of supine positioning. My team and I experienced many successes throughout working on this project including being on time with assignments, effectively communicating with one another during class/in between classes/through iMessage, and successfully updating each other on our schedules and other assignments due. My group and I have worked well together throughout the project process and have gotten satisfying grades on all parts of the project so far. I think our group works so well because we all have the same motivation, same interests, and similar work ethics. Challenges my group and I came across were very slim. One personal conflict I have been going through is figuring out when what assignments are due when and mixing up dates with my other classes’ assignments. I resolved this by asking my peers to submit the assignments together to make sure we are all on time and submitting the appropriate materials in the future, such as the new rubric as opposed to the old one.
