Ethical Considerations for EBP

Ethical Considerations for EBP

My understanding of the nurse’s contribution to ethical conduct of research and implementation of research findings has changed since completing the multiple ethics assignments. My understanding has changed since completing these assignments because when taking the courses on social and behavioral research, I learned an immense amount about different ways to perform unethical studies and what to do if I witnessed or was apart of an ethical dilemma. Knowing definitions and the difference between terms such as falsification, benefice, justice, helps reiterate the importance of ethical research. Researchers, participants in the study, the justice system, and outsiders to any study have certain obligations/duties regarding ethical research. A nurse must realize that a study can become unethical at any point, and it is the responsibility of the nurse to enforce justice and ethical policies when conducting research or participating in research. In the film Miss Evers’ Boys, Eunice Evers is a nurse who was chosen to participate in what was known as the Tuskegee Study. The Tuskegee Study was a study that was supposed to investigating the recovery process among African American males in Alabama who have syphilis. This study however took a twisted turn and the nurse Eunice realized that the study was killing the participants by having them not receive treatment. After realizing this, Eunice knew the study was unethical and eventually stood up for the participants after years of helping with conducting the research. Eunice eventually did what every nurse should’ve done and made sure the unethical practices were brought to light. It is necessary for nurses to know the historical evolution and principles of research ethics. Knowing the history of ethics and the current principles of research ethics is important to ensure patient safety, follow legal practices, and promote ethical research conducting. Three out of the five learning objectives for the evidence-based practice course involves providing quality nursing care. One objective for evidence-based practice includes using evidence-based research to promote safe, quality nursing care. Achieving these learning objectives allows me to safety participate in research and reiterate ethical principles to make sure safe, quality nursing is occurring. To promote quality nursing, you must refrain from unethical practices in research, and promote the current ethical policies for conducting research. The two social and behavioral courses and the film Miss Evers’ Boys were tools that helped me better understand ethical considerations for nursing.
